Crudity and Savagery: We are Better than this America

What terrifies me is not the disgusting rhetoric of the far-right, that has been around for generations, and history leaves us quite numb to these kinds of people. However, it is the hatred and a complete disregard for other human beings that literally makes me sick. Personally, I know I have been sheltered most of my life to this level of hatred (e.g. white privilege), it never seemed to bubble to the surface as it has in the past. My entire adult life has been dedicated to the study of History. I love America, and I love what it stands for, but we have never been void of trauma, unrest or scandal. From Slavery to Native Americans, the Confederacy to Segregation, etc. As most of us know, learning about something and then seeing it is completely different. Witnessing a person use their automobile, an iconic symbol of America, to kill their opposition just because they disagree with them is barbaric, and there is no room in America for these people.

As a Christian, I am appalled by these people, by their beliefs and their inability to see the core of American values and what a blessing this country is to its citizens. We as Americans are so fortunate to live in this society, and still, I wonder how we went from President Barack Obama to Trump. I do not understand the regression. The last eight years seemed as if we were a nation of educated people striving towards a beautiful future, one of inclusion and promise. Today, our country looks very bleak, sad, and unfortunate.

The core of American history rests on the fact that diversity has always held promise, that though we are different and unique in our own ways, together we can build a future worth living in. This week the underbelly of American society was shown in all its crudity and savagery. We all knew it was there, but like myself have done nothing to combat the injustice of another decreeing themselves Judge and jury. We do not have to agree, we probably never will, but we must come together and find common ground to move forward towards a better future. Otherwise, pack your bags and find an island somewhere very far far far away. Those against the fabric do not belong. We are a nation of various creeds, races, and backgrounds; we are America.
